Labor For The Magic Not For The Money: A Lesson from Shaquille O'Neal
Superstar athlete and supreme entrepreneur Shaquille O'Neal
was on my faculty for a live event and shared three powerful lessons I trust
will bring value to you. I'll jump right into them:
Ø Keep Your Kids Humble and Grounded. When
his children would say, "Dad, let's buy this-we're rich," hed reply,
"You're not rich, I am." The old adage
"shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" is generally
true. Financial wealth is often made by the first, enjoyed by the second and
lost in the third.
Ø Remember Your Roots. Too
many people reach world-class success in their field then forget who brought
them to the dance. Shag
explained to my audience that before every home game the Lakers would play, he dId drive to his former neighbourhood in a poor area of Los Angeles —and
shoot hoops with the kids on the street. Then he did get back into his car and drive to the
game. I asked him why he would do this. His reply was classic:
"Because those kids used to be me.
Ø Never Work Purely for the Money. Shag
shared that as an entrepreneur when he did a deal only for the promise of a
massive cash jackpot, the ventures always failed. Yet when he accepted an opportunity because it inspired him,
because it would force him to grow as a leader and because it just felt right,
the results were inevitably excellent.
Yes, my friend, do your
work for more than just the money. Do it for the growth it will give you. Do it
for the talents it will introduce you to. Do it for the person it will make of
you. Do it for the meaning it will deliver to you. And of course, always-do
your work supremely well (with positivity and passion even if no one's
watching) for the people you will help, and the better world you'll build
